I don’t know a great deal about feng shui, the ancient art of organizing your environment to optimize energy flow. What I do know is that your work environment can have a major impact on your mood, your productivity levels, and your overall mental health. In my life as a Florida keynote speaker and motivational business speaker, I’ve learned through trial and error how to develop an office space that lends itself to clear thinking and a positive outlook.
I’ll share just a few tips with you today—some general insights into making a work area that really lends itself to your productivity.
Does Your Office Facilitate Productivity?
Add some color. I’m not saying you need to go crazy, and you can certainly maintain a clean, professional vibe. A few paintings, photographs, or hanging plants can help break the monotony of grey and white, however, and you might even consider a new coat of paint that livens things up a little. This isn’t just an aesthetic thing, by the way. Colors can help elevate your mood and keep your mind more engaged.
Rotate your photographs and personal memorabilia. I totally support having family photos in your work space, but over time your environment can grow overly familiar to you—and one way to avoid that is to switch out those photos every few weeks or months.
Add helpful appliances. Would a space heater help you feel more comfortable during winter? Would a hot plate prevent you from needing to get up to freshen your coffee cup as often? Would a reed diffuser allow the office to smell fresher and cleaner? Any of these add-ons can really enhance your work day quality of life.
Ensure good lighting. This can’t be stressed enough: If your workspace is dim or dreary, that can’t help but have an adverse impact on your mood and on your energy levels. Make functional, illuminating light one of the key priorities of your work area!
